BLOOD BANK
a. The blood bank at the Punjab Institute of Cardiology provides round the clock services not only to its patients but also to patients from other government and private hospitals in the city.
b. Patient’s blood is tested for blood grouping, cross matching and screened for Hepatitis B, anti-HCV, and HIV the results are conveyed in 2 hours time.
c. Blood Bank PIC maintains a hospital pool of blood and blood components so that if any patient is to be provided in emergency or needs extra amount of blood during the surgery, it is provided from the hospital pool. We have at least 15-20 units of blood of each blood group in our hospital pool. We have at least 8-10 units of FFP (Fresh Frozen Plasma) of each blood group. Similarly we have a pool of packed red cells which can be provided to the patients in the cardiology wards, as and when required in the hospital.
d. Our blood transfusion services depend on voluntary donors to provide blood, necessary to meet the needs of the patients we serve. To attract volunteer donors initially and to encourage their continued participation, it is essential that conditions surrounding blood donation should be as pleasant, safe and convenient.
CENTRAL STERILE SUPPLY DEPARTMENT (CSSD)
a. The department is responsible for the cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization of all reusable patient care surgical instruments and supplies. The staff process, maintain and dispense supplies and equipment required by medical, nursing or para-medical personnel in designated departments for the care, diagnosis or treatment of patients.
MEDICAL SOCIAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT
a. The Medical Social Services (MSS) project or the patient welfare society (PWS) of this institute was formed in 1991 and is engaged in generating funds and collecting donations.
b. Objective:
The main aim of this project is to help and facilitate poor patients by:
• Providing free medicines.
• Making arrangements for operations.
• Providing moral and psychological support.
• Sources for patients’ help:
• Zakat Fund
• Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal
• Patient welfare society
c. The Central Zakat Council provides Rs.12,000,0000.00 per annum for the sole purpose of Cardiac Surgery. The funds are allocated by the PWS so that maximum number of patients is accommodated.
d. The Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal issues specific amounts as required on case to case basis for the said patients regarding PWS.
e. Donations are used for immediate help of the patient besides this the society arranges donations from various individuals, companies for complete support of cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology cases.
FOOD SERVICES FOR PATIENTS
Punjab Institute of Cardiology has arranged free food for all indoor patients with the help of philanthropic company; L.G. Corporation. For this purpose a separate kitchen, staff and other arrangements are made. A high quality food prepared according to medical advice is served in a hygienic manner. This service has immensely facilitated the deserving patients especially who are dependant on others during their hospitalization and those are from outside the city.
PHARMACY
PIC Pharmacy was established to provide quality medicine and disposable at subsidized rates within the hospital premises. It protects patients from sub-standard medicine and disposable. PIC Pharmacy directly imports medicine and disposable from the manufacturers to reduce cost and avoid re-used disposables. Rates are 25% cheaper than the market.
QUALITY MANAGEMENT UNIT
A Quality Management Unit has been established in PIC to ensure quality healthcare services. Hence lead the hospital towards ISO Certification. QMU was initially established with the donation from a member of the previous Board of Governors. Now it is managed by PIC itself. A full time Quality Manager is designated and in the first phase, three departments of PIC; Radiology, Pathology & Pharmacy have now been ISO Certified. This has helped patient’s trust and improved image of PIC in the competitive market, on an international level..
BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
A large variety of latest Bio-Medical equipment is installed in PIC Bio-Medical Engineering Department with a team of Bio-Medical Engineers, Electronic Care Taker and Assistant Electronic Care Taker are maintaining all Bio-Medical equipment. The department is responsible for service / repair / maintenance of equipment and to keep them in working condition. PIC has the distinction among Government hospitals as almost all of its equipments remain functional all the time.
MEDICAL RECORD KEEPING H.I.M.S. DEPARTMENTS
Punjab Institute of Cardiology has the honor to take lead role in the development of complete Hospital Information Management System (HIMS). A complete web based HMIS has also been developed with the help of a donor. The existing computer system of PIC was felt inadequate to run HIMS. With the efforts of the Head of the Institution the Information Technology Department, Government of the Punjab has provided adequate complete networking of 133 nodes on Cat-6 UTP. PIC has constructed a State of the Art computer server room to host new hardware. The commissioning of new HIMS will grossly facilitate the medical record keeping and patient treatment.
BUILDING MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT
All maintenance and repair work of building is executed by building maintenance department. The department has a team of qualified XEN, Sub-engineer and skilled technician expert in their trades. The department maintains electrical, heating ventilation and air conditioning, lifts, plumber work, wood works and civil works.
LIBRARY
The Library of Punjab Institute of Cardiology came into existence in 1991 with a reasonably collection of relevant books and regular subscription of journals. It is located adjacent to the auditorium at 1st floor. The Library like any other modern libraries contains facilities such as latest books and all sorts of medical literature. Internet facility is available to all the members with online access to medical journals. Every Saturday the Journal Club meeting of the Cardiology Department of Punjab Institute of Cardiology is held here at the library under the supervision of the Chief of Cardiology.
DIGITAL LIBRARY
A digital library is a good addition for the research oriented medical staff. Computer Lab with 8 computers, 24 hours internet facility and access to thousands of online resources is organized by R&CME department. Online links are provided by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and University of Health Sciences, Lahore. Digital library is providing facilities like photocopy, printer, Fax and access to online international journals and websites for PIC Doctors, Nurses and paramedical staff.
AUDITORIUM
It is a 72 seated hall which is fully equipped with latest multimedia system. All lectures, live procedures within the hospital and educational activities are conducted here.
COMPUTER SECTION
Computer Section is headed by a System Analyst. All the departments of the hospital are connected through internal networking which is maintained by the computer section. A new Server Room is also built recently for networking purpose. Computer Section is responsible for data keeping and patient record of the hospital.
